FAQ
Pre-health at North Central College
We do not offer a degree program in pre-medicine. Such programs are too narrowly focused and limit both students' options and the breadth of their undergraduate preparation.
We encourage pre-health students to select a major which is appropriate for their interests. Most choose biology or biochemistry, but other majors are possible as long as professional school entrance requirements are met. Our science courses and degree programs provide excellent preparation for medical school, and faculty advisors help pre-med students select an appropriate program of study.
Among North Central students who apply to medical school, the acceptance rate is well above 90% within two years of graduation. Acceptance rates for other allied-health professional schools are similarly high.
Some schools give a percentage of entering students who are accepted to medical school. We don't think that number is meaningful, because many pre-med students change their minds before graduation, and some students become interested in medicine later. So, we only look at students who actually go through the application process. We also think it's important to look at acceptance within two years of graduation: because medical school admissions are so competitive, students who are not accepted as college seniors often spend a year doing research or getting a master's degree in a related field and are accepted when they re-apply.
Among biology and biochemistry majors, approximately one-third of graduates go on to professional study in a health field (med school, dental school, vet school, optometry, physical therapy, etc.). Another third choose graduate school and research careers, and the remaining third seek employment in education, industry, government, etc. We think there's a nice balance and diversity among our science students.
North Central's pre-health students recognize that helping each other leads to success for everyone! You'll find that although our pre-health students work hard to prepare for their careers, they are very supportive of each other.
One great way to network is to join PHO, our student Pre-Health Organization. PHO student leaders arrange meetings with medical professionals and admissions experts as well as volunteer opportunities and other events that benefit all pre-health students. Our pre-health advisors and the College's Career Development Center can also be of help.
Our health science page has more information about programs of study to prepare for various health-related careers. It also gives contact information for our two pre-medical advisors.
