The Biology major
The Bachelor of Science (BS) will prepare you effectively for medicine, biological research and other challenging careers in the life sciences. Support courses in chemistry, physics and math equip you to think about biological problems from interdisciplinary perspectives, while advanced electives allow you to tailor your program to suit your specific interests.
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) is an appropriate alternative for students in secondary education, nursing or other programs with requirements that make it difficult to complete a full BS degree. The BA degree requires fewer hours in biology and fewer support courses in other areas; it can also be a useful option for transfer students or those changing their majors to biology.
A Biology minor is a great way to prepare for an interdisciplinary career such as bioinformatics (computer science major), biophysics or bioengineering (physics major), mathematical biology (math major) or experimental psychology (psychology major). An elementary education major could also minor in biology to build a strong science background.
A minor in Environmental Studies could complement a biology major with courses in political science, economics, sociology, history and other perspectives essential to an environmental career. Or, it could provide biology and chemistry background for a student interested in environmental law, public policy, environmental history, literature or another environment-related field.
