Dear Colleagues,

Greetings everyone.  It's this time of the year again.  Let’s PAY OUR DUES for 2006.  You can do so by using the form included in this newsletter, or by sending the e-mail renewal form at our homepage address: < http://www.noctrl.edu/societerencesvals >

(If you have pre-paid your dues, just ignore the present renewal form).

Please, don’t use payment by wire (the charges are too high!)

Elections

A. We need to elect one Advisory Board Member.  Gloria Allaire was nominated and accepted the nomination.  You will find a ballot at the bottom of this page.

B. We also want to solicit nominations for

  1. the spanish representative in our Advisory Board Members whose term will end next year.
  2. the next vice-president.  Our current vice-president, Kim Campbell, will become president in function after our conference at Storrs this July 2006.

C. In addition, I am having a year sabbatical for the academic year 2006-2007.  I wonder if any of you would be interested to replace me and step in the position of secretary-treasurer of the American-Canadian branch.  Please, let me know directly or indicate your interest on the ad hoc space on the ballot.

Letter from the President

Dear Members,

Happy 2006! I hope your year has been productive and your courses satisfying. Please remember to renew your membership for this momentous year, the first North American Triennial Société Rencesvals Congress. Please also encourage your colleagues and students in related and relevant fields to consider joining and presenting; the conference registration and presentation proposal forms are available on-line at http://www2.noctrl.edu/academics/departments/modern_and_classical_languages/department_site/SocieteRencesvalsWeb/SRupcomingInternat-lCong.htm. I hope to see everyone there at the end of July!

In other news, Olifant continues to appear online through MetaPress. Our editors, Hillary Doerr Engelhart and Philip E. Bennett, continue to solicit contributions; format requirements are at http://www2.noctrl.edu/academics/departments/modern_and_classical_languages/department_site/SocieteRencesvalsWeb/SRolifant.htm#SubmitArticles (English) and http://www2.noctrl.edu/academics/departments/modern_and_classical_languages/department_site/SocieteRencesvalsWeb/SRolifant.htm#FrenchCall (French) (if you have difficulty with these addresses, cut and paste the entire address into your browser). Cathy Jones is the book review editor; if there is a new publication in the field of romance epic that you would be interested in reviewing, please contact her at cmjones@arches.uga.edu.

The Canadian-American Branch will be meeting as usual at the International Medieval Conference at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. Please check your programs and attend the Société Rencesvals business meeting. This year is my last year as President (my term ends at the Triennial Conference); Kim Campbell will be taking over at the end of July, and we will need to nominate a new vice-president to assist her and to eventually serve as president. If you are an active member and interested in serving, please consider nominating yourself! Members’ input is always welcome and needed, and in these days of tight academic budgets we must work together to keep our Société visible and to continue to attract new members.

Happy New Year and see everyone in Storrs, Connecticut!

Leslie Zarker Morgan,

President, Société Rencesvals, American-Canadian Branch
